Testing of watertightness of a pipe joint with the HK Test Coupling by Straub
Concrete Pipe Joint Tester & Measuring Equipment
Concrete pipe plants operate under tighter specifications than ever. Dimensional tolerances, watertightness requirements, and annual Plant Certification standards all demand reliable, repeatable results, and a failed joint discovered at the jobsite costs far more than one caught in the plant. Hamilton Kent developed our underground pipe testing and measuring tools specifically for precast concrete manufacturers who need confidence in every joint before products leave the yard.
Two Tools. One Standard of Quality.
Keeping defective pipe out of the field requires two distinct checkpoints: verifying that your forming equipment produces joints within tolerance, and confirming that finished joints hold a watertight seal under pressure. Our HK Measuring Tool and HK Test Coupling by Straub give precast concrete plants a proven, practical way to clear both checkpoints before any product ships.
HK Measuring Tool: Underground Pipe Measuring for Plant Quality Control
Accurate joints start with accurate forming procedures. The HK Measuring Tool provides precast plants with a practical way to verify that joint-forming equipment remains within tolerance. If your bell or spigot dimensions drift outside spec, your gaskets cannot perform as designed, regardless of gasket quality.
Our underground pipe measuring tool takes the subjectivity out of dimensional checks. Plants use it to confirm that their finished product and precast forming equipment meet the tolerances required by project specifications and certification programs. When dimensional problems surface early, corrections happen in the plant rather than in the field.
HK Test Coupling by Straub: Concrete Pipe Joint Tester
Traditional pipe joint testing meant filling a pipe with water and pressurizing it from the inside. Our HK Test Coupling by Straub flips that approach. This external concrete pipe joint tester installs around the outside of the joint and applies up to 50 psi (345 kPa) of pressure from the outside, testing couplings for infiltration rather than exfiltration. Infiltration testing is widely recognized as the more critical performance measure for underground water conveyance systems.
The HK Test Coupling is easy to set up, requires minimal water, and leaves your concrete completely undamaged.
Hydrostatic Testing Support for Project Requirements and Plant Certification
Annual Plant Certification and project-specific hydrostatic testing requirements put real pressure on production schedules, and meeting those requirements starts with having the right process in place well before an auditor arrives. Our technical team works directly with precast concrete plants across North America to help establish hydrostatic testing procedures that satisfy engineering specifications and certification program standards.
We can assist with test setup, pressure protocol selection, and documentation practices that withstand third-party review. Whether your plant is preparing for a first-time certification or tightening an existing process ahead of a major project, our team can step in at any stage. Getting testing procedures right the first time protects your certification status and keeps your production timeline on track.
Why Concrete Pipe Plants Choose Hamilton Kent
Hamilton Kent has worked with the precast concrete pipe industry for decades. We understand that manufacturing quality is not a single-step process. It spans the gasket, the joint geometry, and the verification that both perform together. Our pipe joint testing equipment and measuring tools exist because we saw plants investing in premium gaskets while using inconsistent methods to verify joint performance. We’re ISO 9001:2015 certified, and manufacturers also know they can rely on our hydrostatic testing support.
Talk to a Hamilton Kent Technical Representative
Every concrete pipe plant has different production volumes, pipe sizes, and certification requirements, and the right pipe joint testing equipment depends on all of them. Our technical representatives work directly with plant managers and quality assurance teams to identify the tools that fit your specific operation. What standards govern concrete pipe joint watertightness testing in North America?
Watertightness testing for precast concrete pipe is primarily governed by ASTM C1103 for joint acceptance testing of installed precast concrete pipe, and ASTM C443 covers the gaskets used in those joints. For manholes, ASTM C1244 outlines the low-pressure air test procedure. Many municipal specifications also reference local DOT standards. Your specific project documents will indicate which standard applies, and our technical team can help you confirm that your pipe joint testing equipment setup meets those requirements.
How does external pressure testing (infiltration) differ from internal pressure testing (exfiltration), and why does it matter?
Internal (exfiltration) testing pressurizes the inside of the pipe to check whether water escapes outward through the joint. External (infiltration) testing applies pressure to the outside of the joint and checks whether water enters. For underground gravity pipe systems, such as storm sewers, sanitary sewers and culverts, the real-world risk is groundwater infiltrating the pipe, not water leaking out.
How often should plant forming equipment be measured for tolerance?
Industry practice and most quality assurance programs recommend checking joint-forming equipment whenever production problems are suspected, after any equipment repair or modification, and on a scheduled basis as part of your ISO or Plant Certification program. There is no universal frequency mandated across all standards, but many plants incorporate dimensional checks into their monthly or quarterly QA schedules. Catching a tolerance drift early, before it affects a full production run, is far less disruptive than discovering out-of-spec joints during a certification audit.

HK Turns Municipal Pipe Joint Testing Inside Out with the Straub Test Coupler
Hamilton Kent turned joint testing for concrete pipe and manholes inside out – quite literally – with the development of the Straub Test Coupler. While traditional joint testing involves filling the pipe with water and pressurizing it from the inside to test for joint leaks, the Straub test coupler is installed around the joint and applies pressure from the outside […]
